Magistrate Michael O’Brien sentenced Parsons, who appeared from police custody via audio-visual link in Young Local Court last Tuesday, for his crimes which were committed on April 12.
Parsons will remain behind bars for the most serious of his charges. Parsons’ legal representation said the remaining charges he was facing were on the lower end of the scale of seriousness and if they were being dealt individually they would be on the lower end of the sentencing.
Parsons other convictions were two months in jail for shoplifting a $15 beanie and for contravening an Apprehended Violence Order. He was also convicted and fined $300 and disqualified from driving for three months for a low range PCA charge.
During Parsons’ appearance in court his legal representative expressed his father’s wishes for his son to come home from prison as he had been assaulted twice while in custody.
He also said he hoped his son would be a little more responsible with who he associates with once he is released. His representative said Parsons’ time behind bars had made him think and respect the life he has.
“It’s a pity that it’s taken the loss of his liberty to come to that realisation,” Magistrate O’Brien said. “It must be very disappointing for your father to see his youngest son here today.
“To cave in to the whims of your so called friends doesn’t take any courage and you have paid the price for it. The time you have spent and the time you will spend in custody you will never get back. Is the person that I have been reading about in the facts you?” Magistrate O’Brien asked Parsons.
“No, your honor,” Parsons responded. Parsons said he wants to change his life, turn it around and he doesn’t want to hurt himself or his family anymore.
“You promised the court back in February this year that you would not re-offend and you ended up back in here.
“You are being held to account by the people of NSW because the community has standards,” Magistrate O’Brien said.
According to police facts Parsons was charged after an incident that occurred on April 12.
Parsons and the victim had been friends for some time until a falling out occurred over a mutual female friend.
About 12 pm on April 12 the victim was inside his unit with a friend when Parsons showed up at the property entering the residence through an open rear window.
At the time the victim was in the bathroom when Parsons yelled out, “Oi, it’s Dwight, I’ve come cause I said I would yesterday...I’m gonna stab you you gronk (sic).”
According to the facts Parsons picked up a golf club that belonged to the victim and sat on the bed waiting for the victim to leave the bathroom.
When the victim entered the room Parsons began questioning why the victim had made him lose the female friend saying, “You’ve got five minutes to answer my question or I’ll smack you in the jaw.”
When the victim did not respond Parsons sat behind the victim and commenced to tap him on the head lightly with the head of the golf club while he said, “you’ve got five minutes to answer or I’ll smack you in the jaw, go out on the grass and I’ll flog you out there.”
It was at about this time police attended the unit after receiving several reports from neighbours about a violent disturbance.
The victim opened the door and appeared terrified.
Police entered the unit and saw Parsons still in possission of the golf club which he was tapping on the ground.
Parsons said, “it’s all sweet I am allowed to be here, we’re just talking.”
Police asked Parsons to wait where he was while the victim and his friend were spoken to privately outside.
Police said Parsons tried to push past them saying, “get the {expletive} out of my way, I am leaving.”
It was at this time that Parsons was placed under arrest.
Irate, he continued to threaten the victim yelling, “you’re gone, you’re finished. I’ll come back, you made me lose everything.”
Parsons attempted to escape by climbing out of the back window of the residence during which he was detained and placed in handcuffs while he continued to yell abuse and threats at the victim.
He later made full and frank admissions that he attended the victim’s premises for the purpose of intimidating him and he possessed and used the golf club to assist in the intimidation.
