Students in 5S wanted to do something for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal to raise money for the members of the Young community that need it the most.
During lunch and recess break students organised stalls and games that fellow students could participate including limbo, a lolly guessing jar, chocolate and cake stalls, students even organised a second hand book stall where classmates could purchase pre-loved books.
“It was lovely to see the Year 5 students being responsible members of the community and raising funds for such a worthwhile cause and most importantly thinking of others,” Year 5 teacher Mrs Smith said..
Students school wide enjoyed the event and took part in many of the different activities on offer helping the 5S students to raise a total of $378.50 for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal and to help their fellow community members in Young.
“Getting into our own, warm beds at the end of a day isn't something many of us stop to appreciate,” a St Vincent de Paul spokesperson said.
According to the St Vincent de Paul society here are over 105,000 Australians who experience homelessness on any given night.
That number includes those who don't have their own bed, or may not even have a bed at all.
“But we're determined to help change this,” the spokesperson said.
“Last year we provided warm beds for 365,164 people, but next financial year we're determined to do more.”
The St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal allows people to donate as little or as lot as they like with the option of only giving once or making a contribution every month to change the lives of locals who need it the most.
Money donated to the Winter Appeal goes towards the provision of blankets, food for a week, help paying utility bills and rent allowing stability into the lives of the less fortunate.
According to St Vincent de Paul they want to be able to help 1.3 million people, provide 365,164 beds for a night and serve over 2 million hot meals, so every donation counts.
Those who want to be able to do more can donate their time by volunteering at local Vinnies shops. The newly opened and bigger Vinnies store in Young is always looking for volunteers to help them in one way or another. Phone 02 62347445 to talk to someone about volunteering. Anyone cleaning out wardrobes or closets can donate items of warm clothing or blankets at the local Vinnies store.
