Despite a game effort, the Young Yabbies Rugby Union side was defeated 46 to 7 by a strong Queanbeyan Whites Rugby Club at Cranfield Oval on Saturday.

Following a promising start to the game, Young were unable to control the ball when in a scoring position allowing Queanbeyan to pounce, outpace the cover and score out wide.
Unable to find any space through the Yabbies forward pack, The Whites made good use of their solid, pacey backline to skirt around the edges to score their second.
Some excellent counter attack from the local side saw them again in a position to score only to see Queanbeyan snatch the ball to score. Continued sustained attack from the visitors saw their backs run in three more tries before the break for a handy 36-0 lead.
The second half started well for Young when youngster James Schiller showed amazing speed and evasive skills to leave five defenders in his wake and score. Michael Stallard converted and the Yabbies side lifted. Hamish Kaveney led the way in the forward pack was in everything with his try saving tackles. The Yabbies backline were also tackling everything thing that moved led by Brendan Shoard and Michael Stallard.
Unable to win a lot of line-out ball the weight of possession swung Queanbeyan’s way and they scored two late tries to wrap up the game but it was a strong second half display by Young.

Best and fairest points went to Hamish Kaveney 3, Brendan Shoard 2 and Callum McCaffery 1 whilst Kavaney was also named Player’s player.
On a lighter side of things, the Yabbies did inflict Queanbeyan’s first defeat of the year in the traditional ‘boat race’ following the game. Well done boys!
Second grade
In a game similar to first grade, early field position and pressure from Young was soaked-up, then repelled by Queanbeyan as they turned defence into attack and scored first points.
With a number of Under 18s in the side, the Yabbies were holding their own against a much bigger and more experienced side when they held possession of the ball. Sustained attack from Queanbeyan saw them run in three more tries before the half-time break to lead 29-0. A great start from the Young side saw them run fine lines to break the strong Queanbeyan defence and hammer their line on several occasions only to see a dropped ball or final pass go astray.
The Yabbies were clearly on top in the second half and the break came when Jonty Langfield sliced through to score under the posts. Tom Cummins converted. This unsettled the Queanbeyan side and ill-discipline started to creek into their game with two players sin binned James Schiller was able to outpace the cover and score Young’s second try.
Although soundly beaten this team of youngster’s supported by some old heads acquitted themselves proudly and showed real character to win the second half 14-5.

Best and fairest points went to Dan Parker 3, Jonty Langfield 2 and Michael Hudson 1. Hudo was also Player’s player.
This weekend will be a bye for the Yabbies who were scheduled to play ADFA but had previously played them for the points.
