Schools in the Cootamundra electorate will share in more than $5.5 million in funds as part of the 2017/18 NSW Budget.

Public schools would see upgrades such as improved air-conditioning and amenities through to fresh paint, carpets and signage as the Government aims to make schools more efficient to run and more comfortable to learn in. 

Member for Cootamundra, Katrina Hodgkinson said the funding would benefit both small and large schools in her electorate.

“The NSW Government has committed $5.5 million over the next two years to address the school maintenance backlog across the Cootamundra electorate," she said.

"This includes Young High School, Young North Public School and Young Public School as well as all the fantastic smaller schools in the district including Maimuru, Murringo, Monteagle, Koorawatha and Wombat.

“It is a record investment in school maintenance, far above anything Labor spent when they were in government.”

But Labor's education spokesman Jihad Dib said the funding was not enough.

"Our children deserve the best possible education, and that means providing the best possible learning environment," he said.

"I am bitterly disappointed to learn how little our school principals have been granted to get these repairs completed. This is a government that loves to gloat about its budget surplus. It's time to stop boasting and spend some money on building schools and repairing the ones that need it."

Mr Dib said under the Nationals the school maintenance backlog has surged.

“According to the NSW Auditor-General, between 2013-14 and 2014-15, the maintenance backlog jumped a whopping $195 million in one year which is more than 36 percent,” he said.

“Schools across country NSW are crumbling under the Liberal and National Government."
