Cassie Boland has taken part in orchestral tutorials and masterclasses with leading musicians from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Australian World Orchestra, at a two-day workshop hosted by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Thirty-eight young musicians from regional NSW travelled to Sydney in July for two days of intensive workshops, masterclasses and concerts with three leading classical music organisations.
The students worked with expert musicians from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO), who gave the young musicians tutorials on key orchestral repertoire.
Boland also took part in masterclasses with members of the Australian World Orchestra (AWO), a unique ensemble made up of Australian musicians drawn from top orchestras around the world.
Nine tertiary students from Sydney Conservatorium played alongside and mentored the younger regional musicians, as part of Sydney Conservatorium’s Richard Pulley Outreach and Regional Engagement Program, affectionately known as the “buddy” program.
The regional music students range in age from 11 to 18 years, and are all members of Regional Youth Orchestra NSW (RYO), an auditioned orchestra of talented young musicians established in 2016 by the Association of NSW Regional Conservatoriums.
Young Regional School of Music CEO James Cronin said it is a pleasure to see musicians like Cassie get these type of opportunities.
“It’s a real joy to provide professional opportunities for students like Cassie, and it’s a testament to the hard work she’s put in," he said.
“There are very few towns the size of Young who can boast a Regional Conservatorium and our community should be proud of what they have helped build over the last 33 years. Being part of a state-wide network makes partnering with these leading orchestras possible and working closely with the Department of Education puts us at the forefront of music education in NSW.
“Our entire staff get a real kick out of seeing our students achieve, and knowing that Cassie is working with these professional orchestras reminds us that there are no limits for regional music students.”
