In May, a stunt by the stand-up comic backfired when a video of her holding a fake bloodied, severed head went viral. The gag was swiftly condemned by progressives and conservatives alike, with Griffin subsequently deleting the video and apologising for making a joke about killing the president.

Now, the comedian has revealed a board member for TV network CBS tried to pressure her into sending a grovelling letter to the President while the controversy was unfolding. The email, published on Griffin's Facebook page, is littered with capital letters and spelling errors.

"You have to get to Trump who has been known to be compassionate," the email reads. "You have one chance left if you send the following letter (not an email) to the President. Don't change a word of it. (Go to Google for "how to address the President" and where to send it, etc."

The board member then urges Griffin to release the letter to Fox News in order to "get the world" to forgive her.

"I think this will possibly get you over the mess," the board member wrote. "I have spent the last hour and a half composing this letter. Please don't call me to discuss it. Just do it. If you don't do exactly what I have written, your career if over."

The letter Griffin was urged to send says she was misguided by fake news and the fact she was "oblivious to humanity".

"Now with my world crumbling around me, I am listening for the first time about the great things you have done and are doing," the letter reads. "How stupid I was to follow the lies of the 'Left'. It took my terrible mistake to finally see the false news.

"I compounded the lies by creating the ugly, disgusting and horrendous, unspeakable thing, thinking it was funny at your expense or [sic] not thinking of the hurt I have caused you and your family ... my stupidity is overwhelming. Thank you sir for hearing meh [sic] plea."

Griffin has told her fans she has released the email because CBS may not be aware one of their board members has pro-Trump "leanings".

"Right now, I'm still 'toxic' in a business which has largely abandon[ed] me out of fear," she wrote. "I'll fight back with humour and dirty truth."
