The new bulk-billing medical centre should open in early September and will initially offer the services of three GPs, but Young’s other medical centres have criticised the Council for giving an “unfair” business advantage via reduced rent, to the new doctor’s.

But Mr McMahon said In recognition of MedCIRC’s significant investment in refurbishing a Council-owned asset, Council agreed to lease the premises to them at a reduced rate for 12 months only.  

“At the end of the 12 months, a full commercial market lease fee will take effect,” he said.  “This sort of commercial arrangement is common business practice, and when considered in context, the agreement shouldn’t be viewed as providing any sort of business advantage.”

“Council currently has an arrangement in place with the YDMC and Boorowa Street Practice to provide some financial rental assistance to GP registrars to help attract more registrars to the area and support them during their time here. “Council was not privy to detailed information regarding any future business plans of existing GPs in Young before the signing of the lease agreement with MedCIRC.”

Mr McMahon said there is no question that the existing medical fraternity in Young has served the community to an extremely high standard.  

“It’s Council’s hope that any and all additional service providers who establish themselves in the Hilltops region, complement the existing services in a way that benefits the entire community,” he said.

“The Council’s focus has always been on trying to facilitate the best possible outcomes for healthcare professionals and patients in our growing region.”
