The Young VIVA 7s girls competition has grown from strength to strength with 63 girls representing the club this year.
The girls have had an amazing year with them named the undefeated premiers for the Southern Inland Competition.
The Young side had 17 wins and one draw across the 18 games they have played with a fantastic effort by all players.
Young went into the final as the favourites against the red hot Cootamundra side that had performed very well through the semi-finals.
Young started quickly with Captain Bridie Turner diving on a clever kick from Sophie Maloney putting the Yabbies up 5-0 in the first minute of the game.
Tay Butcher and Lucinda Madden ran two quick phases to turn the Cootamundra defence around which set up Cleo Baldwin for the second try darting through a gap and crossing the line.
The Yabbies showed their class with a very well structured phase play with Jess Taylor, Lydia Martin, Aleiah Breust and Majella McGrath working the ball up to half way, which let Cleo Baldwin show her form cutting through the defence and sprint away for the Yabbies third try, and go to half time leading 15-10.
Both Sarah McDonald and vice-captain Milly Lane showed their skill with some great runs including the ever speedy Milly Lane’s break through Cootamundra’s backs with a length of the field try.
The Yabbies defence held strong to secure the win 20-15 and bring the silverware home.
The games best and fairest was awarded to Milly Lane. Tries: Cleo Baldwin (2), Bridie Turner (1), Camilla Lane (1).
“My girls have set the benchmark for the competition this year, I have really enjoyed seeing them become great mates over the season,” Coach Rick Baldwin said. “I have been amazed by the improvement in skills, and the commitment they have put in.
“I am glad all the work has paid off, I hope they will remember this season for the rest of their lives because I know I will.”
