The hulking prop, who is still celebrating an NRL premiership success with the Melbourne Storm, was one of the bolters named in coach Mal Meninga’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.
McLean, who ironically will link with beaten grand finalists North Queensland from 2018, was one of the best players on the field for the Storm in their 34-6 victory on Sunday night.
He is one of seven Storm players in the World Cup squad, and will be joined by fullback Billy Slater, back-rower Felise Kaufusi, skipper Cameron Smith, halfback Cooper Cronk, five-eighth Cameron Munster and centre Will Chambers.
He becomes the first former Cherrypicker to be picked for Australian duties since electrifying fullback Brett Mullins, who represented the Kangaroos in 1994, and also the Australian Super League side in 1997.
Prop forward Brett Hetherington was also part of that Super League side.
