Cayless Richens entered a competition with the National Rugby League where he designed a jersey. His entry was selected as the winner allowing the Under 9 player and his team to act as mascots and walk the Australian Kangaroos Rugby League World Cup team onto Canberra’s GIO Stadium before their pool game against the French team.
The Junior Cherrypickers club president Ben Mott said the club can’t thank Cayless enough for the amazing opportunity that has been afforded them with his win.
The big day is on Friday November 3 when the Junior Pickers will lead the Kangaroos onto the field.
Cayless will be joined by some of his family, a group of his Under 9s mates who he has played with since he joined the club as a six-year-old and a few more lucky players whose names were randomly picked.
“The toughest part of it is only being able to take 17 Pickers as opportunities like these are few and far between,” Mott said.
“I know all the kids are super excited by the opportunity they have received thanks to their teammate Cayless.”
The group will be travelling to Canberra Stadium and meeting up at 6.30 pm where the kids will get dressed into their official Match Day Mascot uniform.
At 7.35pm the children will head off into the tunnel with the Rugby League World Cup precinct manager and two chaperones where they will wait for kick off at 8.00pm.
Young residents, families and friends will be able to watch the boys run the Aussie side onto the field on Channel Seven who are broadcasting the Rugby League World Cup.
The Rugby League World Cup kicks off on Friday October 27 when the Kangaroos take on England in Melbourne.
