Owners, Peter and Cath Mullany, attended a reception at Government House on Thursday night with His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (retired) and Mrs Linda Hurley.
On the following day at the presentation lunch at Pier One the locals were delighted when their 2015 “Joseph” Cabernet Sauvignon was announced the trophy winner.
“It was a great thrill and very affirming to receive this award,” Peter said.
Ballinaclash are small wine producers making only one red wine per year, alternating between Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
Both of these wines have been exhibited recently with the 2014 “Sub Tuum” Shiraz collecting a medal tally of 17 awards including five gold medals and the younger 2015 “Joseph” Cabernet Sauvignon being awarded nine medals and a trophy.
President of the NSW Wine Industry Association, Tom Ward, said the 2016 Awards proved that quality is being backed up by variety.
“I have not seen such a diverse range of wines from styles to regions be awarded and it gives me great pleasure,” he said.
“NSW Wine is really starting to lead across many areas and it is an exciting time to be a part of.
“The quality of this year reflects the strong vintages of 2014, 2015 and 2016 that we have seen from across our regions. As regions are working out how to grow better grapes and then carry that through to the winery we are seeing distinctive and regional wines as a result.”
The NSW Wine Awards were created in 1996 to build awareness of the quality of wines produced in NSW. It has indicated the potential of new regions within NSW.
Peter and Cath are also excited that their ‘pick your own’ orchard and Cellar Door will feature on Channel 7’s Sydney Weekender this Sunday, November 6 at 5.30pm.
“We thoroughly enjoyed having the Sydney Weekender team visit us and hope that it will encourage even more people to visit the Hilltops Region this cherry season,” Cath said.
