A colourful and harmonious gathering of about 200 people with delicious foods and very talented performances was the successful result of the Young and District Multicultural Association 6th Annual end of year celebration held on Saturday, November 5 at the Young Town Hall.
The celebration was opened with a welcome address by President Josie Johnson, with young Moama Fensom who celebrated a birthday the same day, offering the “Welcome to Country”.
Performers were so entertaining and professional! Cultural costumes were aplenty, very colourful, interesting to our Young North Primary School children who also performed a short song “Hello to all the Children of the World” and a poem “The Human Family”. Thanks so much to Harry Cleverdon who is such a great local talent with his performances on piano and guitar, and singing with his amazing voice.
Harry also led the children present in “We are the World, We are the Children”.
African, Israeli, and Greek dances were performed by the Community Hub Dance Group led by teacher Alison McLean, surprising local attendees who were not aware that this was available in Young. From Cootamundra Coota Bollywood All Stars thrilled with their medley of Gallam Goodiyaan, Cham Cham and Lets Nacho, coming back with more Indian Dance in the second part of program.
Surprise performance of two cultural dances was from visiting ACTFA, with another item from Liz Garrett of ACTFA with her Tina Turner impersonation which had people up on their feet and singing along. Rowena Gonzaga Turnbull performed Egyptian Dance.
Mr Hoovert Gonzales from Boorowa told of his multicultural origins, showed his amazing talent on guitar, encouraging participation from the children present, also accompanying the group singing items. and following the parade of cultural costumes, Hoovert Gonzales led YADMA members in singing John Williamsons’s “We are Australian”.
With more members we can plan more activities, with our first planned activity in February 2017 being a bus trip to the Canberra Multicultural Festival.
YADMA meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 2pm, excluding January, in the Maimaru meeting room at the Young Town Hall. Membership is $10, $15 for a family.
