Young will host its first Quick Shear this Saturday, November 26.
With cash and prizes of $12,000 on offer the event has attracted some of Australia and New Zealand’s top shearers.
Spectators are welcome to enjoy the action from the air conditioned comfort of the Young Services Club auditorium from 12.30am.
Among the probable 100 shearers in attendance will be two world record holders.
One, Gene Mills is a shearing legend in Asutralia, and a local man.
Now in his 60s he has been shearing full time since he was 11 years old.
He’s competed in the Golden Shears and he’s destined to be in the Shearing Hall of Fame at Deniliquin.
Gene is still full-time shearing, still shearing 200 to 300 easily.
“He’s always wanted to organise a quick shear so we’ve made sure everything’s going to go well,” one of the event organisers Emily Eason said.
“It’s our first year so we aren’t expecting everything to go perfect but we’re trying to organise it as well as we can.
“We definitely need community support – it’ll be a great day, there will be lots of people watching and in the air conditioned comfort,” Ms Eason said.
Emily, Kyle, Ross, Gene and Josh Mills have been organising the event for the past 12 months receiving sponsorship support from local businesses.
Money raised from the day will be donated to the national body of MND for research into a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.
Shearing will be split into four divisions, Opens, Seniors, Intermediate and Novice.
There will also be a prize for the cleanest shear performed by a lady.
There will also be a Calcutta Auction on the open finals.
People can buy a shearer and if they win they win money pool.
The organisers are also auctioning two signed jerseys.
