To be competitive in harness racing one would think that you would need a large number of horses in work to compete with some of the larger stables throughout the state.
That is certainly not the case in the Young district with locals stables finding themselves returning to the winners circle in the past week.
Firstly we had a double for Peter, Joan and Glenn Schiller last weekend at Blayney.
Last Tuesday night at Exhibition Park in Canberra, Maimuru trainer Katie Jenner again joined the club with a winning double.
The first of her winners came in race two, the J.W.O'Sullivan Pace with her six year old gelding Ned Pepper.
Owned and bred by her better half, Terry, the Dawn Of A New Day lightly raced pacer won his second start in the space of four weeks.
Both of the pacer’s last two wins have been at the Canberra track.
Under the guidance of driver Angela Hedges, Ned Pepper won his seventh race from only 19 starts and in doing so added a nice Christmas present in the bank balance picking up over $2,000 in prizemoney.
The win took his earnings to just over $32,000.
The best was yet come for the stable when in race seven the first starter Wandering Allnight put in a herculean effort to defeat the more fancied and short priced favourite Shutter Island.
Having his first start in a race, the five year old Sportswriter pacer took it up to the leader and looked beaten at the 2900 metre mark but came again in the straight to record a close but decisive win.
Although the Judge declared a neck winning margin to the winner, the mile rating of 2:00.3 was a credit to the training methods adopted by the Maimuru mentor.
Katie had a double reason to smile with the winner being from her Canberra track record holder of some years back, The Dancing Possum.
Lets hope the success of all our local trainers continues as we enter a solid six moths of harness racing in the immediate area.
