The auditorium at the Young Services Club was chockablock on Saturday as hundreds of spectators and competitors got in on the action of the inaugural quick shear.
Competitors from as far away as New Zealand and Queensland travelled to Young for the event, but it was a man from Cootamundra who took out the fastest time on the day. Bailey O’Rafferty of Cootamundra returned a time of 28 seconds, although was unsuccessful in the finals.
Around 70 shearers – including several locals – took part in the event that raised around $5000 for Motor Neurone Disease. In typical Young style locals got on board to help make the day a success, including the senior rugby league team who ran the barbecue.
“Everyone came up to me and said how good it was,” organiser Emily Eason said.
Emily hopes next year’s event will be even more successful with a bigger prize pool and more sponsors, and has already received a vast amount of interest from competitors.
