Young’s seniors are taking the plunge for better health with the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) starting an aqua gentle exercise class at the aquatic centre.
Aqua Classes for older people have re-commenced in Young for the new summer season run by Murrumbidgee Local Health District volunteer, Lenore Schiller.
Lenore is volunteering her time to run these classes for the benefit of the community especially for those people over the age of 50, who are the target group for this program.
The class is ideal for people who have always thought about getting involved in gentle exercise,” she said.
The program aims to improve access to safe physical activity, especially for older adults living in rural communities.
Aqua exercise is particularly helpful to those who wish to improve their balance and flexibility in a friendly, social setting.
"Everyone is more than welcome to come and join in,” Ms Schiller said.
"We know the importance of regular physical activity to maintain good health and this is a great chance for community members to take part in a low cost and fun program offered locally," says MLHD contact for the program, Barb Manwaring.
Barb is the local Health Promotion Officer based at the Young Health Service.
"Aqua gentle exercise provides many benefits and is shown to prevent falls that may result in injury.
“The cost to participants is only a gold coin donation plus pool entry.
“Lenore is then actually planning to donate this at the close of the season to a local charity so this is very much a generous community service being offered by Lenore,” Ms Manwaring said.
“This is really inexpensive and affordable class for one full hour of aqua and well worth the effort of getting to the pool.
“In addition you will feel some real benefits with increased balance, strength and flexibility and will also be lessening your chances of having a fall as you age.
“In addition aqua is a really safe and gentle way to exercise and is particularly beneficial if you suffer from joint issues.”
The classes run on Wednesday and Friday at the Young Aquatic Centre, Marina Street.
Both classes commence at 8.00am.
The classes will run for approximately an hour.
