Facing off against a fierce England side the Roos managed to scrape through for the win 6-0 making the Aussie coach Mal Meninga the first man to captain and then coach to win the title.
Controversy hit the former Young player when Australia got over the try line early in the second half. A protesting Elliott Whitehead implored referee Gerard Sutton to check McLean hadn't used Cameron Smith as an impediment in the build-up to Michael Morgan scooting over. McLean was vindicated.
The game ended on a bitter sweet note with the match being the final time Cooper Cronk, Billy Slater and Smith will run on together with Cronk announcing his retirement from international competition.
