The NSW Rural Fire Service attended and found the vehicle fully alight and feared the burning car would start a large bushfire.

Firefighters were successful in extinguishing the fire with only 300 metres of surrounding bushland damaged by fire.

RFS Inspector Tom McDevitt said the car was fully involved in fire when crews arrived.

“The fire had extended into grassland country and some timber was alight, so crews had to contain the grassfire before focusing on the car,” he said. “Once the grassfire was under control crews then returned to the vehicle to extinguish that fully.

“Our main concern was the spread of a grassfire which could have become nasty; it had the potential to become bigger than it was if our crews didn’t act as quickly as they did.”

Police say the car was torched off Bernies Road near Scenic Road at Wirrimah.

Young Officer in Charge Detective Inspector Scott Wilkinson said it was clear the fire was deliberately lit.

“At this stage, there have been no injuries reported to police and only a small amount of surrounding bushland was damaged it was only the vehicle itself that has been completely destroyed,” he said. “We encourage people to contact police or Crime Stoppers, which can be done anonymously if they have any information on this incident and indeed if they see anything suspicious in their neighbourhoods.”
