As inquiries continue, officers in Young have released CCTV of a vehicle of interest that is described as a dark-coloured sedan with ACT registration.
About 10pm on Tuesday November 14 2017, police were called to the intersection of Clarke and Lovell Streets in Young after numerous reports of a vehicle explosion.
A thorough examination by crime scene officers and the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit determined that the white Ford Falcon was destroyed by an explosive device in a deliberate act.
Officers attached to The Hume Police District commenced an investigation into the incident.
The officer in charge of Young Police Station, Detective Inspector Scott Wilkinson, said, “Two pedestrians in the vicinity of the explosion were lucky not to have been injured. It was extremely dangerous.
“We’re asking that if anyone recognises the car, or has any information about who was responsible for the explosion, that they give us a call.”
Police were inundated with calls from the public reporting the explosion at approximately 10pm on the night of the incident.
Detective Inspector Wilkinson said at the time police were treating the explosion as suspicious.
“The explosion was quite a powerful one and it was heard some kilometres away by most of the township,” he said.
“Upon arrival Police found a motor vehicle that was parked at that location that has been totally destroyed by some sort of explosive device.
“The scene has been secured and the vehicle is undergoing examination from our crime scene people.”
Residents who live a considerable distance from the scene in Briggs Street, Petticoat Lane and Milvale Road reported their houses shook due to the explosion.
Mr Wilkinson said it was clear the car was destroyed due to an “explosive device” being deliberately set off.
“At this stage, there have been no injuries reported to Police and no surrounding property damage it was only the vehicle itself that has been destroyed,” he said.
“We encourage people to contact police or Crime Stoppers, which can be done anonymously if they have any information on this incident and indeed if they see anything suspicious in their neighbourhoods.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au or Young Police on 02 6382 8199.
