The Yabbie men arrived in numbers, fresh cut grass could be smelt in an unusually warm April day, Hagon Williams’s fashion sense and style had the girls in awe, as the boys in green took to the sheds for the battle that was to come.
The Young Yabbies hosted the undefeated Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) squad on Saturday at Cranfield Oval with the home side going down to ADFA 10-35.
The Yabbiemen were looking to hit back after last week’s big loss to Hall which saw them come out firing in the first half of the game.
The mongrel the Yabbiemen brought to the game had ADFA on the back foot and a bit stunned in the opening half of the game.
However, ADFA found composure out wide and went in quickly finding space with a well-placed kick behind the Yabbies defence.
The Yabbiemen then hit back spending the next 20 mins in the ADFA 22 however their defence saw the Yabbies only come away with a three point penalty slotted by Tom Kent.
In the lead up to half time Tommy ‘I-like-to-ruck-ya-face’ Wills found himself being given the cheese by the ref for reason he is still yet to discover.
The ADFA boys took quick advantage of the undermanned yabbie team and put another try on before half time.
Half time talk by Ned ‘coach-at-full-noise’ Mullany gave inspiration to the Yabbie men. Big hits and runs from Captain Tom Kent and outside centre Jake Chandler saw some loose ball come out for the Yabs allowing them to make big metres up the middle of the field and position themselves for points.
A big scrum on the ADFA five metre line with the power house of Hagon ‘Fashion diva’ Williams backed by Hamish ‘Hammer’ Kaveney and Jesh Smith in the second row, allowed James Maloney to pinch the ball from the back of the scrum centimeters out to run over the opposition to score the Yabs first try.
The back end of the second half was a bit more of a struggle with ADFA running over several quick tries. The boys didn’t drop their head all game all players playing out of their skins especially Will Munday and his fellow flanker Matt Happer.
The end of the day the Yabbies left it all on the field and the end score did not reflect the game.
Points went to: Jake ‘Tight hamstrings’ Chandler (1), Will ‘I-hate-Mondays’ (2) and Thomas Kent (3).
