A spokesperson from the Hume Police District said the NSW Police Force has long been a supporter of the event.
The event is now recognised and celebrated by more than 130 countries, including 37 countries where same-sex acts are illegal.
May 17 is derived from the World Health Organization's decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.
Support for this event continues to be well publicised by Assistance Commissioner Tony Crandell, who is the Corporate Sponsor for LGBTI on the NSWPF Corporate Sponsor LGBTI Facebook page which can be found at https://www.facebook.com/policeglbti/videos/1722681427824471/.
Hume Police District Commander, Superintendent Chris Schilt is the Southern Region's Sponsor for Sexuality, Gender Diversity and Intersex as said it is an initiative which is very important to The Hume Police District.
The aim is to raise awareness regarding violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTI people, and the NSW police will be conducting an online campaign over the week to do just that.
“We as an organisation have always sought to organise and attend community engagement events regarding LGBTI issues, though this year focuses more on a virtual push to raise awareness,” a spokesperson for the Hume Police District said.
Events will be held across the region in recognition of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia including an event at the Goulburn Police Academy on Thursday between 11am and 12.30pm to engage with students regarding International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
