Final acceptances yesterday were overwhelming and Young Turf Club Club President Richard Thackeray could not hold back his astonishment at the number of final acceptances for the once a year meeting.
The feature race of the afternoon, race six, the 2018 Young Cup, has attracted a top field once again with the top weight Go Get Em for trainer Kerry Weir undoubtedly being one of the fancied runners in the 1600 metre $9,000 event. The main dangers are certainly the Joe Cleary trained galloper Mossy Girl along with Black Fusion for Wagga trainer and former Harden local Scott Spackman. Trainer Gratz Vella can find a handy galloper and his wide gate should not bother Jindaberra who will carry a moderate weight of 54 kilos. First emergency, Ghost Rider has very good recent form and could sneak a place if a run is available for the Todd Smart trained consistent performer. With a track rating that is expected to be a Good Four, a new track record is a definite possibility adding to what should be one of the best Young Cup races seen for many years.
Racing will commence at 12:50 pm with a Maiden Handicap over 1000 metres. The main chances in a tricky race include Alsaywhat who has run two very good races of late and should be forward in condition to collect the prize from High Citadel for Canberra trainer Daryl Rolfe and Jounama who has been around the money but is overdue for a win.
The second race of the afternoon is again over the 1000 metres with Paris Carver one of the hopefuls from gate five. Being placed three times from six starts and a couple of minor placings, the John Rolfe trained galloper looks the winner here from possibly last start Boorowa Picnics winner Meg’s Gem with another Boorowa performer in Operose from gate two a definite player in this field.
Race three will extend out to the 1200 metre barriers and here the chances include the Queanbeyan trained and recent well backed Boorowa winner Emissions from a wide gate unfortunately. The dangers to the Joe Cleary trained grey include Why Me Lord for Ron Steiner, Rushman and Running broke from barrier one.
Race four is again over the 1200 metres and here last start winner Bon Honour for Brian Young could be hard to beat on that most recent run. Kerry Weir has Foxlike engaged here and again for this regular visitor to the Young course, a win would not surprise for this runner who has the services of leading female jockey Megan Taylor. Others with claims include such runners as Getting Ready and the resuming Pastiche for Roger Waters.
Race five extends out to the 1300 metre barrier and here local trainer Debbie Prest could be in the winners circle with One Eye Watching who has been knocking on the door at its most recent five starts. There will be money for the recent Boorowa runner Plucka Pony who has the services of promising former Young student Patrick Scorse. Patrick had the opportunity to ride at Warwick Farm on Wednesday and acquitted himself well and the opportunity to ride a winner at Young tomorrow is a distinct possibility. Others with claims include topweight Iron Stride for Scott Spackman and possibly Receipt from a wide gate.
The final race of the afternoon is over 1400 metres with a capacity field and the racing will be of the highest standard. The Fancyjonesgirl as had two wins from three starts and looks the winner here for top Canberra trainer John Rolfe. Kayla Nisbet will take the reins on this last start winner and from gate seven is certainly a big chance to win the final race of the day. Others that can upset the best laid plans include Mystique Beauty, Love And Desire and the Joe Cleary trained Battlescar at what should be good odds.
Certainly one of the best meetings seen at Young for some time and the club is confident that the day will be one to remember for a long time.
