National Palliative Care Week runs from May 20-26 and is aimed at raising awareness and understanding about palliative care in the local community as well as Australia wide.
Palliative care is defined as specialised care and support for people with a life-limiting illness, their families and their carers. Palliative care looks after the physical – including treatment of pain and other symptoms – emotional, social, cultural and spiritual needs of the patient and those supporting them through their journey.
Mercy Care Centre Young Operations Manager Mary-Lou Cusack said the health service’s palliative care fundraising campaign will include a raffle, cake stall and cocktail party.
Prizes in the palliative care fundraising raffle include a Bali villa getaway for two people including airfares and a treadmill.
The cake stall will be held in front of the Westpac Bank in Boorowa Street on Friday May 26 between 10am–2pm.
Staff from Mercy Care Centre Young will be selling baked goods as well as answering any questions from the public about palliative care.
The Mercy Care Centre Young — Cocktail Party at Clifton House will be held on Saturday October 13 in the stunning surrounds of Clifton House and Gardens, Young.
Ms Cusack said further information about this event and how the community can get involved will be released in the coming weeks.
“We’re hoping the community will dig deep and help us improve the spaces where we look after palliative care patients,” Ms Cusack says.
Mercy Care Centre Young has four designated palliative care patient rooms with the capacity to accommodate more patients in the 26-bed inpatient ward if the demand arises. The centre also provides a community palliative care service to the Hilltops region.
“‘What Matters Most?’ is the theme for National Palliative Care Week 2018 and this fits perfectly with our staff and Consumer Advisor Group’s desire to enhance and refresh our palliative care environment,” Ms Cusack said.
National Palliative Care Week is supported by the Department of Health with the 2018 theme addressing the need for Australians to plan ahead for their end-of-life care and discuss it with their loved ones and health professionals.
