Mr Briggs said he had arrived to lay some flowers on his father’s grave only to find flowers had been thrown around, a vase smashed and eggs thrown over the plot site and his father’s wasn’t the only grave that had been vandalised.
“I want people to know what has happened so they can come and check on their family’s sites to make sure they haven’t been vandalised,” Mr Briggs said.
Flowers and pots were pulled out and strewn across the lawn, statues and figurines had been smashed and thrown about as well as several alcohol cans left lying around.
Mr Briggs attends the cemetery three times a week since he passed away six years ago to visit his father’s grave and is dumfounded as to why anyone would needlessly destroy something so sacred.
“I’m gutted over what has happened,” he said.
“What do they get out of doing it?”
On Monday morning Mr Briggs contacted Young Police Station and spoke to officers about what had happened.
“It just makes me so angry,” he said. “I’m coming after them.”
On Wednesday morning there was still evidence of the vandalism that had taken place over the weekend with rocks and flowers scattered and pulled out across the cemetery.
Detective Inspector Scott Wilkinson from the Young Police Station said he understands that this type of destruction can be devastating for families and this and any type of vandalism will not be stood for.
“We are looking into the matter and when we find those responsible they will be held accountable for their actions,” he said.
In the meantime Mr Briggs is planning on attending the cemetery on Sunday to clean up the mess left at the grave sites as well as tidying up any others he can find that have been vandalised.
Young police are asking anyone who has any information in regards to the incident to please contact Young Police Station on 63828199.
