The Murringo Community Association sent out the large list of names asking to check the list and replies came in, updates have been done, and the list is now 278 people, interred in the cemetery without a headstone or plaque.
Council have put in the rock and the have planted the shrubs, just in time for this lovely rain - a big thanks to Council gardeners for their great job.
Another big thank you goes to the Murringo Fire Brigade who lent the MCA one of their water pods so when this rain stops, the committee can take it in turns to go down and water the shrubs, it’s called teamwork and working together.
The list of names have gone to the foundry to be written up and then checked off.
The list is being written with a small biography on each person, so a booklet can be published to commemorate.
Incidentally, the Police Department contact Tricia Mack, Murringo’s local qualified historian, some two years ago regarding the police officers who are interred in the cemetery.
The Police Department have for some years travelled to cemeteries placing NSW Police plaques on graves stating who had been in the force.
Tricia has advised the Police Department of the impending unveiling of the Columbarium/Rockery Garden and suggested to them that this could perhaps be a good time for them to unveil the plaques that they indented to be placed on the Murringo police officers’ graves.
Murringo Community Association receives grants
Last week the Murringo Community Association received confirmation that they have been awarded two grants from the Veterans Fair.
One of the grants will be to install a flagpole at the Murringo Cenotaph at the Hall which will be appreciated greatly come memorial services.
The second grant is allocated towards collating photographs and information of men who enlisted in the First World War from Murringo, and publish a hard-cover book for the community.
