Young Lions first-grade team have kept pace with the Pascoe Cup leaders after scraping home to a 1-0 win against a plucky South Wagga side.
Goalkeeper Matthew McKnight led the way for the Lions with a flawless display at the back but it took 80 minutes of football before Abdul Arja headed in the match-winning goal off a free kick.
“It was a pretty scrappy game but it’s more important to play ugly and win than play pretty and lose,” Young coach Mark Mellish said.
Young Lions Women’s
A goal fest from the Young Lions women’s team made the trip to Temora last Saturday a successful one.
Due to injuries, illness and a few girls being away, it would prove to be a tough game as the Lions only had one reserve on hand due to limited numbers. As kick off was at 5 pm conditions were cool however definitely warmer than the previous week’s game.
Young were keen to replicate their first round win and were quickly on the front foot, having most of the possession and taking shots at the Temora goal.
Maggie Davis played up front as a forward and had a fantastic game scoring a hat trick of goals.
Emily Martins had to move into the back line to fill in and according to captain Jemma Long it appeared as though she had played there before, making tackles and preventing Temora’s attacks.
Throughout the game Young were the stronger side and Temora never managed to gain any ascendency which allowed Young to run out winners 6-0.
The win keeps Young well inside the top four.
“I am again proud of how the girls played their hardest even though we were short in some positions. It was pleasing to come away with another win and I cannot wait to have a full side again this weekend,” Long said.
“After we scored first our spirits lifted and we played a controlled match.”
This week Young travel to Wagga to take on Henwood Park at 9 am on Sunday morning.
“We managed to beat them in the first round so hopefully the ladies can again repeat the feat, “ Long said.
The ladies are now seven points clear at fifth on the table, so just a couple of more wins and they will qualify for the finals.
Men’s third grade
The Young Lions third grade were due to play Lake Albert at 1pm last Sunday however Lake Albert had to forfeit the match due to illness and injuries.
This gave Young the three points and keeps the Lions at the top of the table and undefeated.
