Dewar’s legacy pitted the best of the best up and coming drivers against each other in a week long event that included a trip to Young paceway last Tuesday night.
Trailing by just four points going into the final race of the series, Madi Young knew what she had to do.
Naturally winning was at the top of the agenda but she had to ensure her drive Our Positano finished well in front of series leader Cameron Hart to give her a shot at victory.
Hart was aboard Untitled, who was the best-backed runner in the race.
Yet it was Riverina reinsman Chris Judd who got to dictate terms when he drew the perfect gate with the favourite The Bachelor.
Judd did his bit, holding off the charge out of the mobile to lead with a 28.2 second first split of the mile.
Judd and The Bachelor were able to back the speed off slightly with a 29 second split before Judd put his foot to the floor turning for home with a 27 second third quarter before holding off all comers in the straight to score a three metre win in a 1:52.1 mile rate after a final quarter of 29.9.
Young brought Our Positano with a charge and for a moment looked as if she would be in the finish but the four-year-old gelding’s run petered out just before the line as she wilted to finish a close fourth.
Much to Young’s delight, she still took out the Rising Stars series as Hart finished well back meaning Our Positano earned her enough points to take the series.
“It’s been such a terrific week and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” Young said.
“I’ve made a lot of new friends and to be able to compete in this series two years in a row is something I’ll long remember.
“It was certainly a great thrill to come through and win it . . . that was a real bonus and I have to thanks everyone for a great week where we have been treated so well.
