In the lead up to the weekend the Yabbiemen this week wanted to give a call out to the Club sponsors in its report from last week’s match against Queanbeyan.
The Yabbies met out the back of the Australian Hotel – which is right next door to Elders and opposite Watson Toyota – on Saturday morning in a frost that even the boys from Cool Tech would be proud of.
After a quick breakfast stop at IGA and a fuel top up from South West Fuels the team started on there quest to foggy Queanbeyan to take on the Whites.
The convoy was lead by star player Will ‘I bloody hate’ Mondays in his newly purchased pickup truck from McAlister Motors, not to mention his sweet after market rims he had purchased from Tyerpower earlier that week.
On arrival the Yabbiemen were well looked after by the team at Young Physio in order to make sure all men were fit to play.
From the first whistle the Yabbs came out firing like a well lubed machine from Keith Simmons Engineering allowing them to get a 14 nil lead at half time.
It was a quick paced first half however moves that were precisely calculated by Twomey’s allowed James Schiller and Tom Kent to open the game with tries and let the Points Build.
Jesh Smith also led the charge with strong runs around the ruck which allowed the Yabbs to Cultiv8 plays left right and centre on the field.
Unfortunately the second half saw the Queanbeyan team simply out enthuse the Yabbs in the end, and the final score was 14-19.
Post match we asked some of the Yabbiemen to spin us a quality Moses and Son yarn on what they thought of the game:
“Our Red Star balls worked well as we looked to Shipp Electrical up the centre all day, it’s just a shame we have now had Back2Back losses,” Angus Crawford said.
“Yer they had some big piggies out there that even Houston Pork would be proud of, its just a shame we couldn’t keep the momentum going in the second half,” Hamish Kaveney said.
Post match the team made its way back to the Cherry Capital where I’m sure a few fellas would have stopped in at Amcal and The Young Hotel on arriving home to grab some pain relief after a tough loss.
Three points was awarded to Tom Kent who worked like a Rowallan Ram all day. Two points went to Hagon Williams who trucked the ball up like a 550HP CASE IH bought from Carruthers Machinery and one point when to Mike who proved to be hard as MA Steel all game.
The Yabbies take on Gungahlin this weekend on the Yabbies annual Sponsors day weekend. Get down and watch the grudge match of second grade vs old boy’s Mighty Ducks at 1:40pm with contention for the cup hotter than Ray White’s real-estate. This will be followed by the main game Yabs 1sts vs Gungahlin at 3pm.
The Young Yabbies Rugby Union Club are currently sitting in eighth spot on the Australian Capital Territory Rugby Union First Division/First Grade ladder.
