Young police have taken a statement from the child’s mother.
The child was burnt after centre staff placed a fire pit in the playground to toast marshmallows.
The mother said since the incident staff at the centre would not speak with her.
“There was no grid around the fire pit for a start, but I can’t get any answers why because they won’t speak with me,” the mother said.
“The hospital said the staff gave my daughter the wrong first aid and the centre didn't contact me after the incident occurred, I only found out when I came to pick her up. I wonder how competent and how well trained these people are that parents pay to look after our kids.
“I expect that they’d keep children safe and in a low-risk environment, that’s what they are paid to do.”
A spokesperson for the centre said the fire-pit experience was part of their NAIDOC week programming and a formal risk assessment was completed.
“The child who touched the edge of the fire pit was treated immediately by an educator who holds a current first aid certificate,” the spokesperson said.
“A full written report was provided to the parent when they came to pick up the child within the same hour, and our management team have remained in contact with the parent.”
