At the end of April motorists were slammed with a 20 cent a litre price rise in petrol in Young, with the price increase coming into effect overnight jumping from 139.9 cents a litre to 156.9 cents a litre for unleaded (Ethanol 94/E10).
Almost three months on and locals are still filling up for around 149.9 cents per litre for unleaded (Ethanol 94/E10).
The current prices still remain at least 10 cents a litre higher than surrounding towns with Boorowa residents only forking out 139.9 cents a litre for unleaded E10 and 137.9 cents a litre in Grenfell.
The closest prices similar to those being paid in Young are coming out of Cowra where some residents are paying up to 151.9 cents per litre for E10.
At the end of May NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said prices weren’t likely to get much higher but the pain at the pump would continue for some time.
“Regional NSW isn’t seeing the fluctuations we are seeing in the city,” Mr Khoury said.
“A lot of regional towns are averaging 150 cents per litre and it probably also won’t drop lower again any time soon because the regions don’t have a fuel cycle.”
According to Mr Khoury the main reason behind the higher prices was because of the highest demand for oil in seven years, while OPEC nations were limiting supply. Ongoing instability in the Middle East and potential sanctions against OPEC nations Venezuela and Iran could have further effects on prices in the future, he added.
