The Under 16s’ winning streak continued last Sunday in Wagga when the boys beat out Brothers 22-11 at McDonald park.
“Our forward pack laid down a good foundation,” coach Kyle Richens said.
Harry Fitzpatrick and Blake Coombes gave outstanding performances in the match.
“With Brothers missing a player all game through him being sent off, by the end of the game they grew more tired and allowed us to pick up some momentum,” Richens said.
Brothers started well and a lot of penalties in the opening swung the home side’s way.
“They had a good forward pack and were a very sharp team,” Richens said.
“After a month off the boys were very rusty and found it hard to get into a rhythm but some good energy from the bench really helped.
“Persistence all round brought us home in the end by five points.”
This weekend the side is heading to Temora for the last game of the normal season.
“A month off footy really hurt us the last game, I think the most important thing approaching this game is to focus on the key defensive techniques we’ve been working on all year.”
Reserve grade
The Reggies were in a real arm wrestle when they took on Brothers at McDonald park in Wagga last weekend, the game ending in a 28-all draw.
“The bigger Brothers pack were able to make more meters coming out of their end and we found it hard to contain them,” coach Matt Murray said.
According to Murray the boys have worked on their defence this week at training and plan on using all their skills this weekend.
Best players for last week were James Schiller and Gus Smith.
“The positive out of the day is that the one point gained will ensure that we will finish second regardless of the outcome on the weekend,” Murray said.
“This will also gain us a second chance in the semi-finals but our focus is on this week’s game for now.”
This weekend will be the last round of the normal Group 9 season.
“Junee are on the improve so it will be a big game which the boys are looking forward to,” Murray said.
Ladies League Tag
The ladies travelled to Wagga on Sunday to play Brothers, going down at McDonald Park 30-4.
“Our defence went missing for the whole game,” coach Saul Lealaitafea said.
Lealaitafea believes too many turnover balls in the Young side’s half and some ‘dismal’ defence to back it up cost the ladies a win.
This weekend the ladies will take on Junee at Alfred Oval.
“We have our last game this week at home so hopefully we can turn it around,” Lealaitafea said.
