Lions enter semi-final against Henwood Park with no expectation

Young Lions first grade is taking a “nothing to lose” approach into Sunday’s semi-final, piling the pressure on second placegetters Henwood Park.

The Lions pre-season goal to reach the Pascoe Cup final four was achieved last weekend thanks to a hard fought 1-0 victory over Leeton United in the elimination final, setting up a blockbuster clash against Henwood Park.

Recently awarded coach of the year, Lions mentor Mark Mellish is hugely proud of what they’ve accomplished so far, but he knows the Lions need to find another gear to match it with Henwood Park.

“I think we’re a bit underestimated. We have no expectations. Our goal was to make the top four. We’ve made finals and now we’re through the first week and down to the final four,” Mark Mellish told The Witness after Sunday’s elimination final win.

“With Henwood Park, it’s a case of them having quality all over the park.

“We have to improve 100 per cent on our performance last week to beat Henwood Park.”

Young goalscorer from last weekend Alex Mitchell will be aiming to find the back of the net again, while Brad Galvin and Isaac Anderson were both strong against Leeton.

“They’re a good bunch of boys who love playing and they really played for each other out there. It was an ugly win, but it’s finals football and we got the result,” Mellish said.

“We have gone from wooden spooners to just 90 minutes away from a grand final appearance.”

Kick-off is at 3pm on Sunday at Leeton Sportsground.
