Adam Tanner from A.D Tanner Constructions won two awards, being the only finalist for the renovation addition project of the year, and won the best home in the Riverina out of seven other finalists.
It was the first time the 43-year-old had entered the awards and because of the business’ achievements, he said he will consult previous clients to see if they can showcase their work.
“It was a great night, really humbling; it’s a beautiful home but it was the first time we entered the awards so it was quite a surprise,” Mr Tanner said.
Having worked in the industry for about 25 years, 15 of those years have been working for himself.
The home that won was for a late 1970s, three bedroom, single garage home in which the owners lived in that street for years and purchased this home, a couple of doors down, to be renovated to suit their needs and lifestyle.
“There were parts of the existing home that remained, which were updated, and we extended the back and created quite a substantial home with two separate identities,” he said.
“The front was for the children and the majority of the home’s back area was for the couple to live in.
The home was transformed into a modern and “slightly industrial” design, with a combination of materials, including timber floors and precast concrete walls and a pool.
“We did change the home dramatically and all up the construction took about nine months, as we faced some extremely difficult conditions,” Mr Tanner said.
“We faced a wet winter and also construction took place over Christmas.”
HIA’s executive director Greg Weller said the awards demonstrated an “emergence of young builders”.
“Guys like Adam and Jai Warden brought really good projects to the markets and it’s definitely providing a lot of home competition for the established home markets,” Mr Weller said.
“One thing that was very pleasing were the judges comments and they were positive about the quality of work, the level of finish and attention to detail.
“Certainly one thing that stood out for me is that the Riverina continues to have really high quality projects and builders and it’s a good reflection on the trade.”
The awards celebrated the top design and construction in residential buildings, with Wagga’s Dejong Homes also top achievers.
Mr Weller said the popular building designs in the Riverina are the country style homes, on bigger blocks, as well as modern homes on the higher-end market.
