Club President, Tom Wills, said the track should remain firm ahead of the meet. “The drought has had a significant effect across the region and of Young is no different,” he said. “We’ve had a little bit of rain recently that has helped and when the stewards inspected the track last week they were quite happy with the surface”.
Tom said the committee had been working hard on the track, but also around the grounds to get them in top condition. “I’d love to thank the committee for what has been a great group effort. We are quite a young committee and it’s good to see everyone getting in and having a go, and hopefully we can continue to build up to bigger and better events,” he said.
The committee has applied for grants to help update the kitchen and restroom areas, while also maintaining the grandstand. In the future they hope to be able to use the venue more frequently throughout the year, and also open it up for further public use including weddings, business functions, and other celebrations.
The day promises to be a great family day out with something on offer for everyone. Children under 18 will benefit from free entry and there will be free face painting and rides for the younger ones. Entry for pensioners is $10, while for those over 18, entry is just $20 giving them access to full bar and catering facilities, TAB and bookmakers, plus live music all day from jazz band ‘Shiraz’.
While tickets are available on the day, a great option is to get a membership before you head out to the races. “A membership is a good way to save some money. A standard membership is $60 and includes one members ticket and three guest tickets, so it’s a great bargain,” he said. “It also gives you access to the members bar and we will also have a DJ entertaining members and their guests”.
Tom also thanked the sponsors for their support of the races and looked forward to seeing a big crowd come through the gate. A courtesy bus will be available for racegoers and will run from 11.45am until 7pm that night. It will pick up and drop off at the Australian Hotel.
While the day promises to be one of fun and laughter, there will also be a serious side to this years event. Samara Johnson, who rode last years winner Liabilityadjuster, passed away last year after a tragic car accident. Tom said the club will a special memorial presentation in honour of the late jockey.
