Shepparton-Numurkah got out of the blocks early against Deniliquin to lead 5-2 after the first round of singles with Chris Ridgwell, brothers Chris and Tom Haines, Aaron Maidment and his father Damian all getting wins.
There were two wins to Adrian Mulham and Bayden Thompson for Deniliquin.
The second round was more even and had eight matches with four wins each, with the best match seeing Deni’s Bayden Thompson edge off Hayley Gorringe 66-58, meaning Shepparton-Numurkah held on to a 9-6 lead.
It was a close ending with Peter Thompson and Mulham for Deniliquin winning 49-48 in the match of the day. Teammates Bayden Thompson and Rob Nevinson held off the fast finishing Damian Maidmant and Jess Ridgwell 53-49. But Shepparton-Numurkah won the day 11-8.
Kyabram played Echuca at Shepparton and it was the top Kyabram players who got the job done, with Chris Usher defeating both Kelvin Nye and Lee Simonds and Dean Hubble defeating Simonds, but narrowly losing 32-35 to Nye.
Grant Findlay and Chris Vegter defeated both their Echuca opponents Rod Barnes and Michael Anderson. Echuca players Ryan Gordon and Marlene Stapleton fought hard to get their team back in the contest, winning against John Buckle and Liam Melverton.
The last singles winner was Kyabram’s Sandy Spencer over Ryan Gordon.
With Kyabram also winning one of the remaining three doubles matches, a 9-5 result takes Kyabram through to the Fitz-Gerald semi-final, November 11 at Corowa.
At Wodonga, the results were more one-sided with Albury Commercial Club def Cowra-Grenfell 24-6 and Young def Wodonga 13-2.
The Martin semi-final will be Young against Albury Commercial Club, at Cootamundra on November 11.
Matches of the day were one-point wins to Commercial Club’s Alex Mathews over Brett Treasure 52-51 in the singles, then to Justin Chu and Michael Brigden def Phillip Clarke and Tracey Taylor 36-35 in the doubles.
Cowra-Grenfell’s Mark Aspin and Brett Treasure def Wade Stephens and Alex Mathews 45-42 in another close contest.
The closest results for Wodonga v Young were a 52-49 win for Young’s Jimmy Robinson over Campbell Shobbrock, who was also defeated by David Coombes 52-59.
Wodonga’s Peter Baines fought hard, losing his two contests 42-47 to Mark Broker and 44-52 to Geoff Palmer.
Baines got his revenge in the doubles, partnering former Leeton player Jack Quinlivan to def Palmer and Broker 45-32.
