Sheather and his wife Karen, from Young, cheered Youngstar to a sixth place finish in the race that stops a nation on Tuesday at Flemington. 

“It’s something I’ll never forget. You don’t realise all the hype until you're there and you experience it,” Mr Sheather said.

Youngstar galloped home hard on the soft track but couldn’t match the superior pace of this year’s winner Cross Counter who produced an eye-catching turn of pace in the final stages.

“That race had the best 20 two milers in the world in it so to race and run sixth against that quality horse, she’s done us proud. I’m really proud of her,” Mr Sheather said.

“It’s a remarkable achievement to get there, let alone finish sixth.”

Mr Sheather said trainer Chris Waller will move Youngstar to the paddock until at least Autumn.

“She’ll be out in the paddock for three months. 

“Chris [Waller] might give her a campaign in Autumn ahead of next Spring but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

And what’s the chances of another Melbourne Cup?

“It all depends on weights she’s given and how she’s going at that time. Those races up against Winx is all weight-for-age so she’s given a weight based on her age but the Melbourne Cup is handicapped so we just don’t know,” Mr Sheather said.

“We’ll just wait for it to all unfold which is still exciting.”
