The team of pathologists including Janet McLachlan, Kylie Winbank, Luke Robertson and Kerryne Laybutt decorated the waiting room and also took part in a Murrumbidgee Local Health District wide baking competition with pathology themed delicacies.
“Pathology Day is about recognition,” Janet said.
“For years it has been all about the nurses and doctors, but for patients to find out results they need to come from us.”

Since the 1960s residents in Young have been able to have specimens taken and tested at the facility in Young rather than having to have samples sent off, allowing locals to get results back sooner.
Pathology may not be as attractive as some university courses on offer, however staff at Young are encouraging those about to enter higher education to consider the profession and enjoy the stability, diversity, ever changing and interesting world of pathology science.
There are five staff members employed at the Young Hospital facility including scientists and technical assistants who offer a range of onsite pathology tests such as full blood counts, chemistry (including cholesterol, blood glucose etc) and urine tests.
Last year alone (2017) the department performed almost 50,000 tests to help local patients receive results and treatment.

“We may never meet the people working in laboratories behind the scenes, but they are a critical part of our healthcare system providing the answers that matter for all of us,” Janet said.
The pathology department at Young Hospital also works closely with the NSW Health network of pathology teams to ensure the local community has access to the best specialist diagnostic care for conditions such as cancer.
The pathology facility at the Young Hospital is available to be used by all local patients by simply asking their GP for a referral.
