According Monash University religious diversity Professor Gary Bouma there is no rules around the Christmas tree, except the ones you grew up with.

The Professor told Fairfax Media individuals tend to abide by the traditions of Christmas they grew up with as a child at home.
He said the December 1 tradition is strong in Australia but not for all.
Christians believe the tree should not be erected until after Advent, which finishes the Sunday before Christmas, ie Christmas eve this year.
