Young’s Michael Stallard is continuing to make a name for himself on the Riverina and Central West triathlon circuits.

Stallard, who races with the Cowra Triathlon Club added to his silverware with a third place finish in last weekend’s Temora leg of the Riverina Tri Series.

He has also been competing in the Central West Tri Series this season which involves Cowra, Mudgee, Bathurst, Dubbo and Orange.

At Temora on Sunday Stallard finished third to West Wyalong’s Angus Westaway.

Westaway finished the Olympic distance event in two hours, six minute and 41 seconds, more than three minutes ahead of second-placed Scott Donaldson (2:10:07).

Stallard’s finish time was 2:12:22.

The Olympic Distance triathlon involves a 1500 metre swim, followed by a 40km bike ride, finishing with a 10km run.

Stallard was the fourth competitor out of the water is 23 minutes, 53 seconds, moved up in the placings with the second fastest bike ride of 1 hour 5 minutes and five seconds.

His 10km run in 43 minutes and 23 seconds was the second fastest of the competitors.

Winner, Westwaway, had the fastest time in all three legs, completing the swim in 20 minutes 11 seconds, the bike in 1 hour four minutes and nine seconds and the run in 42 minutes 20 seconds.

“It’s the first time I’ve had a win in Temora which is pretty exciting,” Westaway said.

“I’ve been doing more training recently because I’m trying to build up to the Port (Macquarie) Ironman later this year.

“To prepare for that, I’ve been getting stuck into some really long training sessions and I think that showed out there.”

Westaway admitted it was a smaller field in this year’s Olympic distance event and said the absence of “top-tier” racers like Wild made it easier for him, especially in favourable conditions.

“I would’ve like to race those top-tier riders and really test myself to see where I’m at, but I was happy with the race overall.”

The Central West series moves to Orange this weekend.
