"I moved to Australia 35 years ago and it was hard to get engaged with the community. We encourage whoever is new to town get involved, because days like this can help people settle happily and make friendships through culture, food and learning, and also celebrating your culture," Josie Johnson said.
"It's about diversity, forming friendships and harmony."
More than 100 people from all nationalities shared food and company at the Young Railway Station.
Dancers from the Filipino community of Sydney provided entertainment, while members of the Young Multicultural Association performed traditional dances and music.
An art exhibition showing works by members was also opened by Hilltops mayor Brian Ingram.
Some of the works were made by children as young as five years old, Ms Johnson said.
"It was a collaboration between the Young Multicultural Association and the Young Society of Artists," she said.

Diversity, Arts and Cuisine was the theme of the day, and also inspired many works on display in the gallery.
"A wonderful mix for a great get together of cultures," Josie said.
While people viewed the works in the Burrangong gallery, ethnic cuisine and live performances was keeping all busy on the Young Railway Station platform at the visitors centre.
Harmony Day was sponsored by Multicultural NSW.
Josie Johnson thanked APCO from Sydney Hovert Gonzales and YADMA dancers for providing entertainment, the YADMA cooks and also mayor Brian Ingram for opening the exhibition.
Ms Johnson said Harmony Day is something the Young Multicultural Association hosts each year, however this was the first time it included an art exhibition opening.
