Both organisations are calling for donations of blankets and warm clothing as the weather cools down.

Lt Michael Hindle from the Salvation Army said having a good stock of winter essentials at Young's family store ensures people do not have to choose between staying warm and food or paying other bills.

"A lot of people, especially our elderly community members will have to choose between food and warmth," he said.

"It's also a lot about dignity, a lot of people feel like they can't ask for help and so a lot of the blankets and jackets are at a low price, it also gives them that independence.

"In Young there's also Anglicare, LFE and Lifeline and they also service the same community members that we see each day as well."

Lt Hindle said the store was specifically on the lookout for blankets and winter clothing such as jackets, jumpers, flannelette shirts and long-sleeved shirts.

"Especially with the climate right now going from cold one day and warm the next, I think a lot of people that aren't well off will struggle to with the different climate change over the days and weeks," Lt Hindle said.

Young Salvation Army Family Store Manager, Mark Wells, said any donations must be clean and usable.

"As long as they are in one piece, that's fine, but the cleanliness is the most important thing, if they come in dirty, we're going to have to end up throwing them out anyway," he said.

"Don't give it to us if you wouldn't give it to someone you know."

St Vincent De Paul have also launched their winter appeal, a Vinnies spokesperson said.

"The shop has all of the Winter Appeal collateral on display and is actively seeing financial donations, as well as donations of blankets and warm clothing," the spokesperson said.
