The previous night, Kaye had alerted the local fire brigade to a fire that had broken out at a shop next to the bakery.
Kaye and a friend banged on doors to try and wake up the Rendall family, who lived in the quarters above.
Gavin and his family managed to escape.
"We got talking and he drove us home, and that was it," Kaye said.
"He'd been keeping an eye on me for quite awhile and I wasn't taking notice of him," she laughed.
About four years later they were married.
Kaye started working at the family bakery, where Gavin worked as a baker until the day he retired.
"He was always a baker, he was there right up till he retired," Kaye said.
Gavin and Kaye have four kids: Wayne, better known as 'Jock', Kaye-Marie, Cynthia and Andrew.
Jock and Cynthia live in Young today, while Kaye-Marie is in Taree and Andrew lives in Woronora in southern Sydney.
They have eight grandchildren and five great-granddaughters.
She said their secret to longevity is enjoying each other's company.
"We enjoyed old time ball room dancing for 25 years or so and it kept us moving. I'd say keep moving and enjoy one another's company," she said. Gavin, who is now a resident at Young's Southern Cross Aged Care, has been highly involved in the community.
He spent seven years with the fire brigade including three years as captain, for more than 10 years he was president of the Young North Public School P and C, and he was on council's traffic committee for 26 years.
He also drove the Greenethorpe school bus for more than 20 years after retiring.
Kaye owned her own cake decorating business called Kaye's Cake Decorating, after they sold the bakery. Before marrying Gavin and joining the Rendall family bakery, she worked in various roles at the hospital in Young.
Kaye was born in Carcoar and moved around the countryside with her family before settling at Kingsvale, then eventually moving to Young about the age of 18 years old.
Gavin, whose parents are Scottish, was born in Burwood moving with his family to Young as a young child.
