Scott John Anderson, 20, had been living in Temora while working as a concreter when the offence occured in the early hours of February 10 this year.
He was convicted at Young Local Court last week while appearing via audio visual link from jail.
The victim suffered stab wounds to their side, neck and chest and was taken to Canberra Hospital for treatment.
Police facts say Anderson used a "folding knife", and the parties had been involved in an argument and wrestle.
In sentencing, Magistrate Michael O'Brien noted that the community won't tolerate this behaviour.
"These types of offence occur all too often," he said.
"General deterrence is a significant factor in the sentencing exercise. The community expects courts to send a message."
Anderson's solicitor argued that his client was someone who is immature, and had learnt a lot from the four months he'd already spent in prison, having been held in custody since being charged.
"It's his first time in prison. I'm submitting, Your Honour, take into account his age and good prospects of rehabilitation," the solicitor said.
Magistrate O'Brien said there's no reason Anderson needed to be carrying a weapon.
"According to facts, the knife was at the ready, which is a concern," he said.
"You cannot carry weapons, we don't live in a society where there's no police force or authority where you need to arm yourself for self-defence."
Anderson told the court he'll "never forget this".
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison with seven months non-parole backdated to February 10.
The charges he was facing were reckless grievous bodily harm and having custody of a knife in public.
He'll be eligible for release on September 9.
Magistrate O'Brien urged him to engage in health services and programs available to him. "I hope we never see you again," he said.
