The truck was travelling on the Murringo Road near Grove Estate vineyard when it experienced mechanical issues which caused the attached dog trailer to catch fire, police say.
Police, ambulance and firefighters responded, as well at the HAZMAT team from Wagga and Rural Fire Service volunteers.
The driver of the truck escaped uninjured.
Police and council remain on the scene about 9.30am, managing traffic at either end of the incident.
Sergeant Paul Martin of Young Police said it was an "intense fire" and the trailer was completely destroyed.
He expects the road to remain shut until at least 10.30am while the trailer and fertiliser is removed and the road is cleared.
"Roads were closed in both directions because the fog was thick and the dog trailer is on a blind corner," Sergeant Paul Martin said.
Hilltops council staff have diversions in both directions.
