The inaugural meeting was held on Friday, June 22, 1979 in the Young Technical College commencing at 7.30pm. Nineteen men and women attended.
The Young Garden Club is proud to say that one of the inaugural members Miss Jean Spring is still a current member now and the club's patron.
"I joined the club 20 years ago in 1999 at the invitation of the then president Mrs Clare Freudenstein OAM. A year later I was elected secretary and held that position for 13 years till I became president six years ago," president Helenie Carmody said.
In 2001 a constitution for incorporation was drawn up which was approved by the Department of Fair Trading on July 26, 2001. The Young Garden Club became incorporated and along with hundreds of other garden clubs all over Australia is affiliated with the Garden Clubs of Australia, whose motto is 'Friendship Through Gardens'.
The venue for the 40th anniversary celebration is Clifton House and Gardens on Sunday, September 15.
The guest speaker will be the president of the Garden Clubs of Australia, Mr George Hoad.
Mrs Carmody thanked South West Slopes Credit Union for their sponsorship and fellow member for help preparing the event.
