About 6pm on Tuesday January 7, 2020 NSW Rural Fire Service declared a Total Fire Ban for the Hilltops Shire Council Local Government Area to come into effect from 12.00am Wednesday January 8, 2020.

The Total Fire Ban not only covers the Hilltops region but the rest of the Southern Slopes including Cootamundra-Gundagai and Snowy Valleys Local Government Areas.
The fire rating for the day will be 'Very-High'.
NSW Rural Fire Service advise under Severe and Very High fire conditions:
- Well prepared homes that are actively defended can provide safety during a fire
- Follow your Bush Fire Survival Plan and remain vigilant
- Keep informed by listening to local radio, watching television news broadcasts and monitoring www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.
NSW Rural Fire Service also advised they may issue a Harvest Safety Alert for areas of heightened risk and said harvest operators should monitor conditions and regularly check that they are operating within guidelines.
Under a Total Fire Ban no fires may be lit in the open and all fire permits are suspended. Gas and electric barbeques may be used provided certain conditions are met.
NSW Police announced on Tuesday at a press conference they would be cracking down on smokers who discard lit cigarettes and ignore Total Fire Ban orders.Total Fire Ban rules and a map of current Total Fire Ban areas are listed at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.
