The public schools in and around Young introduced what the NSW Department of Education has called Phase One where students are given an allocated day to return to face-to-face learning, while continuing with learning from home for the remainder of the week.
"I'm so happy to be back," a Young Public School student said on Monday.
"I've missed my friends and it's been hard working at home, especially the stuff on the computer."
The consensus amongst a lot of students is that they are excited to be able to catch up with friends, some of whom they haven't seen in nearly eight weeks.
"I've been at school because Mum works," another student said.
"There's been a lot of kids here but it's good that I can go back to my normal class."
Young Public School during the shutdown period at the end of Term 1 had an average of between 20 to 50 students attending, that number on Monday more than doubled with the return of face-to-face learning.
Phase 2 of the NSW Department of Education's plan will see students returning to school for at least two days a week and will be implemented when it is assessed as safe to do so.
