This book is based on a true story of a young boy, Salva Dut, who fled his home during civil war in his country of Sudan.

Salva now runs an organisation called Water for South Sudan who build and repair wells as well as educating Sudanese villagers on the importance of clean water.

Year 6 students are raising money for the organisation by asking for donations and sponsorship.

The students walk 500m around the school grounds carrying up to 10 litres of water, replicating a journey young girls make every day in Sudan.

"We've come to realise in Year 6 just how important something as simple as clean water can be to others not as fortunate as ourselves," Year 6 student Marli Shipp said.

"We are so proud that our students took on this initiative and want to be an example of service to others," St Mary's principal Mr Andrew Casey said.

As of Thursday afternoon, $2000 had been raised by St Mary's Primary School.

"We think that sometimes you really do have to walk in another's shoes to truly understand," Year 6 teacher Kym Connelly said.
