For the supply charge, Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis issued Cannings a community corrections order for a period of 18 months with a condition he must not take illicit drugs for the next three months.
A police statement tendered at court details how police had attended Cannings' residence in Koorawatha for an unrelated matter in November last year.
Cannings appeared nervous, police say, and admitted to having cannabis in his possession. Police seized 4.31g of the illicit drug.
During a search of his phone in relation to another matter, police found evidence of supply during June, 2020.
At court, Cannings' solicitor said the supply was to a close friend.
"It's not something he does on a regular basis," his representative said.
He pleaded guilty to both charges.
Magistrate Elizabeth Ellis told Cannings to not re-offend.
"I'm making an order for three months you're not to have any drugs that aren't prescribed to you by a doctor. It's only three months. I expect to you stay out of trouble," she said.
For the possession charge he received a community corrections order for nine months.
