The archaeologists will keep record of any items uncovered during the bulk excavation phase, and will provide a report to Hilltops Council. A Department of Education spokesperson said there's still no evidence of prisoner transfer tunnels existing between school grounds (courthouse) and TAFE (old jail).
"The Young Library design has been developed in close consultation with heritage consultants to investigate the heritage significance of the site. The project is currently in its bulk excavation phase and under supervision by a team of archaeologists as per the approved development consent," the spokesperson said.
"Any items that are uncovered will be recorded in an archaeological salvage report which will be submitted to DPIE [Department of Planning, Industry and Environment] and Hilltops Council.
"The Department of Education is aware of speculation that a prisoner transfer tunnel exists on the site, however extensive investigations including ground penetrating radar scans, site investigations underneath the courthouse building by a timber specialist and exploratory digs on site in locations suggested by members of the public have not identified any evidence that a tunnel exists."
